Requirement for Deep Cabinets

The cabinet above our microwave extends about 2.5" further than a standard upper cabinet. The builder installed top venting microwave had a second intake vent that opened up from the face front so the top of the microwave was installed flush with this cabinet. The problem we faced in finding a replacement was that all of the current top venting microwaves have a second intake vent over the door, meaning that any new microwave must come forward so as not to cover that intake vent with the deeper cabinet. This bump out was the perfect solution. The hardware store had recommended adding a wood furring strip to the wall to bump out the microwave but this would have to be carefully attached to the wall and then stained so that it did not look so obviously home crafted. We were so happy to find that Whirlpool was smart enough to manufacture this much more elegant mounting kit and that Sears PartsDirect was stocking it! The installation guide is helpful and gives instructions no matter the stud location on your wall, using the hardware that comes with the new microwave. The mount also comes with new templates for two different size microwaves so you can align the vent location and screw holes to accommodate the added distance from the wall. We had a little trouble with the front left screw location on the template not matching to the microwave by ~1/8" but we had already lifted the microwave into place when this was discovered. In our case, one held the microwave from the bottom while the other expanded the hole size from the top, being especially careful not to drill into the new microwave. Long story short, check the hole location with the template before you lift it into place.

My handyman had never installed this part before but said it was easy with the template provided. Low profile microwave was expensive but looks great and doesn't obscure the pretty backsplash.
